Just a couple of hundred years ago, it was widely accepted in modern society that the Earth was well, flat. Even in the 20th century, we came to discover that what we perceive as solid matter isn't even solid at all, but vibration. It makes one wonder about a lot of things. So much of our day-to-day lives are built around beliefs that may or may not be true.
If you were to take this one step further, just how many of our beliefs about ourselves are actually true? There are entire spiritual paths built around this one question:
Who am I?
There is a story about a man in India who would create the most exquisite and realistic sculptures. At one point, he chiseled a life-sized statue of an elephant. Later, he was approached by a friend who asked him, "How on earth did you create this extraordinary statue of an elephant?"
The sculptor replied, "It was easy. I just chiseled away everything that didn't look like an elephant."
The process of discovering who we are in our essence is a much larger topic than can be covered here. But what every one of us can do, here and now, is to begin to introspect and ask ourselves, "What am I not?"
We might ask, "Am I really this person who has a tendency to get angry?" Or, "Is this jealousy I constantly feel really me?" "Am I really unworthy?" "Am I really incapable?" "Am I really that fearful person I sometimes believe myself to be?"
The more we can chisel away the parts of ourselves that are simply limiting beliefs and habit patterns, the more space we open up to discovering who we really are.
Until, little by little, the beautiful being that is you, the real you, begins to reveal itself.
